Apple to Produce iPhone 16 Pro Models in India

Apple is reportedly expanding its manufacturing footprint in India by producing Pro models of its upcoming iPhone 16 series in the country. This marks a significant step in Apple’s ongoing strategy to diversify its production away from China, where the majority of its iPhones have traditionally been assembled. According to reports from 9To5Mac and images circulating on the Chinese social media platform Weibo, the packaging for the iPhone 16 Pro with a label stating “Assembled in India” has been spotted. This suggests that the production of the iPhone 16 Pro has already commenced in India, a development that could significantly alter the dynamics of Apple’s global supply chain.

Earlier, reports from sources like Money Control indicated that Apple, in partnership with Foxconn, its primary contract manufacturer, had plans to start assembling the iPhone 16 Pro models in India.

This move aligns with Apple’s strategy to diversify its manufacturing bases to mitigate risks associated with geopolitical tensions and to capitalize on the favorable manufacturing conditions in India.

Bloomberg also reported that Foxconn could begin assembling the iPhone 16 Pro models “within weeks of their launch,” with other partners like Pegatron and Tata Group expected to follow suit soon after.

Export Focus and Domestic Market Dynamics

 

Despite the local assembly of the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models, it is anticipated that a significant portion of these units will be exported to markets in Europe, West Asia, and the United States.

The decision to focus on exports is driven by the relatively lower domestic demand for high-end iPhone models in India, where consumers often gravitate towards more affordable options. However, as Apple’s presence in India grows and the market for premium smartphones expands, this trend could change in the coming years.
